Cross-section by Josef Pelz is a generative series that explores the dynamics of complex organisms by analysing the relationship between microscopic and macroscopic features in abstract digital species. On a microscopic level, millions of particles are simulated within a three-dimensional domain, all obeying a simple set of instructions. These particles constantly move through space, reorient themselves based on their surroundings, and leave traces that shape their environment and influence others. On a macroscopic level, a complex system emerges, dictated by the simple instructions given to the particles.
The series examines how slight changes to these rules can drastically redefine the overall structure, countering the feeling of powerlessness regarding societal transformations. Pelz's works are realised with custom tools developed for simulation and rendering, utilising GPU implementations to explore the parameter space and visual results in real time, defining an exploratory practice.
The system is inspired by an algorithm known as 'Physarum', developed by Jeff Jones and popularised by Sage Jenson. 'Physarum Transportation Networks' are digital representations of slime moulds and are relevant in multiple research fields, forming the basis of Pelz’s innovative work.
